The MVI56-GEC is a ProSoft universal Ethernet interface module. The module has a current consumption of 24 mah at 3 volts DC, and the backplane has a current consumption of 5 mah at 800 volts DC. The MVI56-GEC features LED indicators to assist with monitoring and troubleshooting functions. The application ports on the MVI56-GEC are Ethernet ports using RJ45 connectors. This port has a link and active LED indicator. In addition, application ports (PRT1, PRT2) support full hardware handshakes. The second RJ56 port on the MVI45-GEC universal interface module (from the top) is the Debug/Configuration port (CFG) and does not support hardware handshakes.

The P2 and P56 ports on the MVI1-GEC are used to connect the module to the serial module. The main purpose of the MVI56-GEC ASCII interface module is to make it easy to connect ASCII devices using the TCP/IP protocol and ControlLogix processors. The device to be connected may have Ethernet capabilities or may be part of an Ethernet connection using a thin server. The MVI56-GEC occupies a slot in the input/output rack, whether remote or local. To enhance data transfer between the interface module and the ControlLogix processor, the MVI56-GEC uses proprietary backplane technology.
