The TPS202x series distribution switches are suitable for applications where high capacitance loads and short circuits may be encountered. These devices are 50m N channel MOSFET high-side power switches. The switch is controlled by a logic enable terminal compatible with 5V logic and 3V logic. The gate drive is provided by an internal charge pump designed to control the rise time and fall time of the power switch to minimize electrical surges during switching. The charge pump requires no external components and allows power supply as low as 2.7V.

When the output load exceeds the current-limiting threshold or a short circuit occurs, the TPS202x switches to constant current mode, which pulls the overcurrent (OC) logic output to a low level, thereby limiting the output current to a safe level. When the continuous heavy overload and short circuit increase the power dissipation of the switch, resulting in a high junction temperature, the thermal protection circuit closes the switch to prevent damage. Once the device is sufficiently cooled, it automatically recovers from the thermal shutdown. The internal circuit ensures that the switch remains off until an effective input voltage is present.

The TPS202x devices differ only in the short circuit current threshold. The TPS2020 limit is 0.3A load, the TPS2021 limit is 0.9A load, the TPS2022 limit is 1.5A load, the TPS2023 limit is 2.2A load, and the TPS2024 limit is 3A load (see). The TPS202x is available in an 8-pin small integrated circuit (SOIC) package and an 8-pin dual-in-line package (DIP) with an operating junction temperature range of -40°C to 125°C.
