Product overview

The Cisco Nexus 7000 M1 Series 48-port Gigabit Ethernet module with XL option is a highly scalable module designed for performance-driven, mission-critical Ethernet networks. Using the M1-XL forwarding engine, these modules provide throughput of up to 600,000 packets per second (Mpps) and large forwarding information bases (FIBs), making them ideal for deployment in Internet exchange points (IXP), service providers or large enterprises. The 48-port module comes in two versions: an optical Gigabit Ethernet option using small pluggable (SFP) fiber (Figure 1) and a copper 100/1000/45 option with an RJ-10 connector (Figure 2). ®

The Cisco Nexus 7000 Series switches include a modular data center grade product line designed for highly scalable 10 Gb Ethernet networks with a switch matrix architecture that scales to more than 15 terabits per second (Tbps) and is designed to support high-density 40 and 100 GB Ethernet deployments. These switches are designed to meet the requirements of most mission-critical network environments, providing continuous system operation and virtualized universal services. The Cisco Nexus 7000 Series is powered by the proven Cisco NX-OS operating system with enhanced features, real-time system upgrades, and excellent manageability and maintainability. Its innovative unified switching matrix design is designed to support the consolidation of IP, storage, and interprocess communication (IPC) networks on a single Ethernet switching matrix. ®

Features and advantages

The Cisco Nexus 7000 M1 Series 48-port Gigabit Ethernet module with XL option has a number of key features designed to enable flexible deployment and support the highest performance environments that require high density and a comprehensive feature set. With an optional extensible feature license, these modules can run in enhanced XL mode, allowing them to take advantage of the full forwarding table provided on the forwarding engine, which is critical for large-scale deployments such as large enterprise or Internet peer-to-peer environments. This larger FIB table can support multiple copies of the complete Internet routing table for use in Internet-facing deployments with virtual Routing and forwarding (VRF) and virtual device context (VDC) support. The ability to operate in XL or non-XL mode makes these modules very flexible in many types of network environments. The fiber version of the Cisco Nexus 7000 M1 Series 48-port Gigabit Ethernet XL module also supports a wide range of SFP fibers, allowing deployment in various types of situations, From long-distance intersite deployment via single-mode fiber (SMF) to short - and medium-distance deployment via multi-mode fiber (MMF) for data center and campus environments. The Cisco Nexus 7000 M1 Series 48-port Gigabit Ethernet module with XL option provides 48 Gbps local switching, ideal for the access layer where high density, high performance and continuous system operation are critical.

All Cisco Nexus 7000 M1 Series I/O modules include an integrated forwarding engine. The M48-XL forwarding engine on the 1 port module is part of the Cisco Nexus 7000 M1 family of forwarding engines and contains larger FIB and access Control list (ACL) tables. The module is fully compatible with all existing M1 modules and provides functional consistency with all existing M1 modules.
