Direct mapping between readable versions
Machine code is a strictly numerical language that is the lowest level interface to the CPU for programmers. On some cpus, there is a (modifiable) form of low-level interface microcode that implements machine code. However, on a normal commercial CPU, the end user cannot change the microcode. Assembly language provides a direct mapping between digital machine code and human-readable versions, where digital opcodes and operands are replaced by readable strings (for example, 0x90 is the NOP instruction onx86). While it is possible to write programs directly in machine code, managing single bits and calculating numeric addresses and constants is tedious and error-prone. For this reason, programs are rarely written directly in machine code in modern environments, but can be written in low-level languages for troubleshooting, program patching (especially when assembly source code is not available), and assembly language disassembly.
Most utilities today are in high-level or assembly languages. The source code is then translated into executable machine code by utilities, such as compilers, assemblers, and linkers, with the important exception of interpreters, [Note 1] which are not translated into machine code. However, the interpreter itself can be viewed as an executor or processor that executes source code instructions, usually consisting of directly executable machine code (generated from assembly or high-level language source code).
