NI USB 8451 (Part number: 779553-50, 779553-01, 192317D-02 and 192317D-02L) is a bus-powered full-speed I²C/SPI interface device. The device can be used for connection and communication with peripheral interface devices, system management buses and integrated circuits (I2C). USB 8451 is a portable communication solution for integrated circuits and consumer electronics. The interface device is equipped with eight digital I/O lines. Each of the eight DIO lines can be individually programmed to be used as a static digital input or digital output line. These universal digital lines can be used for a variety of applications, such as I2C device configuration or switching leds. Static DIO lines can also be used to monitor or control digital signals. All samples of the digital input line and updates of the digital output line are timed by the software. The NI 8451 software is installed using the software CD that comes with the device.
Unlike PCI interfaces, this interface device can be used near I2C/SPI devices, reducing L2C bus length and other noise-related issues. The NI USB 8451 is a self-feeding device that does not require an external power supply. The USB interface provides GND and +5 V power to power its internal circuits. USB 8451 National Instruments provides integrated protection against overcurrent, overvoltage, and undervoltage for every SPI, DIO, and SPI CS signal. There are four SPI modes and advanced apis for custom I2C and SPi transactions. The NI interface device comes with a USB B-series socket and two 16-bit screw terminal plug adaptors for I/O connectors. It has a maximum I2C clock rate of 250 kHz and a maximum SPI clock rate of 12 MHz.
