The NI GPIB-140A/2 (part number 777998-01, 777998-02, 777998-03, 777998-04, 777998-05, and 777998-06) is a member of the N Instruments GPIB-140A family. This model uses fiber optic cable, which can be extended by 2 km. Without the use of an extender, GPIB systems cannot be deployed above 20 meters, which is the limit specified in the IEEE 488 standard. With the GPIB extender, two independent remote GPIB systems can be connected to operate as a single GPIB system.

The NI GPIB-140A/2 uses different communication protocols to send and receive data over optical cables. With this extended arrangement, users can operate two devices on the same bus. The system can also help users exceed IEEE 488's limit of 15 devices per continuous bus. Instead, users can use up to 28 devices on the same system without sacrificing performance or speed. For longer distances, users can connect multiple extenders in series. To increase the load, users can also connect devices in star mode.
