The National Instruments GPIB-120B bus isolator/extender can be used in test and measurement systems to provide electrical isolation and expand the number of devices allowed on the GPIB bus. The GPIB-120B provides an electrical isolation interface for one or more GPIB devices.
It provides up to 2,500 VDC discontinuous isolation between GPIB ports and between each GPIB port and the power supply based on a 5-second dielectric withstand voltage test.
The GPIB-120B also expands the number of devices allowed on the GPIB. The IEEE 488.1 standard specifies a maximum of 15 electrical device interface loads in a GPIB system. The GPIB-120B increases the number of GPIB system devices from 15 to 28. It also provides bidirectional extensions, where controllers, speakers, and listeners can exist on either side of the extension

The GPIB 120B bus isolator extender has excellent isolation capabilities because it provides up to 2,500 VDC isolation (non-continuous) between the GPIB port, the power supply, and each individual GPIB port. With this model, it is possible to achieve bidirectional expansion of GPIB system devices, where speakers, listeners, and controllers can exist on both sides of the extension.
NI GPIB-120B can be used as an isolated carrier band for instruments and IEEE 488 master line controllers, which can effectively eliminate sensing common mode noise and ground ring noise. Each GPIB-120B enables users to add up to 14 additional devices to the GPIB bus. Functionally, the device operates transparently. Therefore, GPIB control and communication programs that work with unconsumed systems can also be used with extended systems.
The extender/isolator provides two data transfer modes: buffered mode and unbuffered mode. In its standard configuration, the unbuffered transfer mode is set to the default switching setting. However, the user can select the desired data transfer mode using the switch provided on the back of the device. The NI GPIB-120B comes with 8 data cables (DIO1, DIO2, DIO3, DIO4, DIO5, DIO6, DIO7, and DIO8) and 3 hardware grip cables.
