The NI SCXI-2400 module is capable of controlling any SCXI box through either an RS-232 port or an RS-485 port on the user's computer. The RS-232 port is used to connect directly to the serial port of the computer, while the RS-485 port is used in long-distance, multi-chassis system configurations. To operate the SCXI 2400 module, Users need SCXI chassis (SCXI-1000, SCXI-1000DC, or SCXI-1001), RS-232 Type 5 null modem cable or RS-485 4-wire cable and ferrite, computer with RS-232 or RS-485 port, and software (LabVIEW for) Windows, LabWindows/CVI for Windows, or NI-DAQ for PC compatible software). The SCXI-1200 DAQ module is an optional accessory to the NI SCXI-2400.

The baud rate of the module is configurable. The user must select the baud rate of the SCXI-2400 serial interface module. If a user connects multiple chassis to an RS-485 network, they must configure each chassis on the same network to get the same baud rate. The user can specify the baud rate using switches 9 to 12 on the front panel of the module. The HDLC address can also be configured by the user. However, if the user is not using multiple cases, the HDLC address can remain at the factory default of 1. The RS-232 port cannot be used to control multiple chassis from a single serial port; Only the RS-485 serial port can control multiple chassis from a single serial port.
