Allen-Bradley 1756-IF16H is an analog input module for the 1756 ControlLogix Programmable Logic Controller Automation (PAC). It supports integration of 0-20 mA or 4-20 mA input signals via hardwired and high-speed addressable Remote Sensor (HART) communication protocols. The module provides sixteen (16) differential current signals and one (1) HART modem for each channel.
The 1756-IF16H features an integrated analog-to-digital converter (ADC) using a successive approximation method. The analog conversion resolution ranges from 16 to 21 bits, allowing more measurement points to be displayed. The converted signal is saved in integer mode (left-justified, 2-second complement) in IEEE 32-bit floating-point numbers.
Allen-Bradley recommended using a single wire connection when connecting the signal end to 1756-IF16H. The wire diameter is 0.33... 2.1 mm 2 (22... 14 AWG) Solid or stranded shielded copper wire with an insulation class of 105 °C (221 °F) or higher and a maximum insulation thickness of 1.2 mm (3/64 in). Compatible detachable terminal blocks (RTB) for use with the 1756-IF16H are the 1756-TBCH and 1756-TBS6H.
The calibration accuracy of the 1756-IF16H is better than 0.13% of all filter ranges, while the module error is 0.3% of the range. The input scan time of this module is 11... 328 ms, filter dependent, the module HART scan time is estimated to be 1 second if all channels are HART enabled.
The 1756-IF16H allows you to choose which of three data formats to use: analog only, analog and HART PV, and analog and HART by channel. Choosing the correct data format to use is important because it determines which values are included in the module's Input tag and the functionality available to the application. The "analog only" format contains only analog signal values and analog states. Analog and HART PV are recommended when you want the members of the tag to be arranged like non-HART analog input modules. When you choose this data format, the analog values for all channels are grouped near the end of the label, making it easy to view all 16 analog values at once. Each channel in the module has two input ranges of 0 to 20 mA and 4 to 20 mA, the latter for HART instruments. These ranges specify the minimum and maximum signals that the module can detect. The module also has a module filter for attenuating input signals starting at a specified frequency. This applies within the scope of the module and affects all channels. Note that HART instruments should not use 1000 Hz module filters. Real-time sampling (RTS) is another feature of this module. Applied within the scope of the module, this parameter indicates how often the module scans its input channel and obtains all available data. After scanning, the module will multicast the data. But before the module is configured, you need to set the real-time sampling (RTS) period and the requested Packet Interval (RPI) period. It also has below range and out of range detection, allowing the module to detect if its work is outside the limits of the input range. This is a status indication that will tell you that the measurement of the input signal is not accurate because the signal exceeds the module's measurement capability. The module is based on a per-channel application with a digital filter that smooths noise transients in the input data. In addition, the module has a break detection function, which notifies you when the signal line is disconnected from one of the channels, or if configured in the 4 to 20 mah range, when the RTB is removed from the module.
