The Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation 1747-L553 module is a CPU or central processing unit module for the Allen-Bradley SLC 500 and SLC 5/05 series. The CPU has built-in CMOS RAM to support battery backup, and can also support the Allen-Bradley 1747-M13 memory module, giving it 64K of additional memory. The 1747-L553 CPU module has an Ethernet channel and an RS-232, DH-485, DF1, or ASCII port. This CPU is one of the most flexible cpus in the SLC 500 and SLC 5/05 series, as it can handle up to 64 connections. This means that the 1747-L553 CPU module can communicate with 64 devices or applications simultaneously.

The controller is ideal for medium to large scale applications, with control requirements ranging from manual to automatic control in discrete or analog loops, as well as the implementation of complex control technologies with a large number of embedded instructions. It can be used in factory automation, process automation, and even for motion and position control requirements.

It is also capable of sending messages to other Allen-Bradley PLC platforms, such as PLC 5, CompactLogix, and ControlLogix, over specified communication protocols. With this processor, an additional remote I/O scanner module and a DeviceNet scanner module can be installed to configure I/O via a universal remote link or DeviceNet network. The 1747-L553 processor offers a shorter 0.37 ms bit instruction execution time and a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port. The DH+ communication port is three times faster than the DH-485 port. It has all the features of other SLC 5/03 processors, such as online programming, flash upgrades, floating-point arithmetic, and a built-in real-time clock, key switches, and calendar.
