The Programmable controller 1785-L80B is the central part of every control system based on the Allen Bradley PLC-5 series. The 1785-L80B connects local, extended, and remote I/O modules to a single control system through a variety of communication interfaces. The 1785-L80B controller provides four built-in ports. Ports are identified as channels 1A, 1B, 2A, and 2B. All ports can be configured and used as remote I/O scanners, remote I/O adapters, and DH+ communication interfaces. DH+ communication can be used both to remotely program and monitor the 1785-L80B and to create a point-to-point communication network between various PLC-5 controllers. Remote I/O connectivity is used for real-time data exchange between the controller and I/O, operator interface and other functions. All four channels on the 1785-L80B can be used as remote I/O scanners or remote I/O communication adapters. Remote I/O scanning mode I/O information is read and written between a controller and a remote I/O device. In this mode, the 1785-L80B is a monitoring controller for other controllers and remote I/O adapter modules that are in adapter mode. When any of the four channels 1A, 1B, 2A, or 2B are in remote I/O adapter mode, the controller monitors the local I/O where its controller resides while communicating with the monitoring controller over the remote link. On the 1785-L80B, the Data Highway + (DH+) link can be used on all four existing channels. DH+ communication can be used for data transfer to other PLC-5 controllers or other advanced components of the control system. DH+ link can program multiple PLC-5 controllers. On the front panel of the 1785-L80B controller, there is a 25-pin connector labeled channel 0. This is an optically isolated EIA RS232C port. Channel 0 supports ASCII and DF1 full-duplex, half-duplex master, and half-duplex slave protocols. The green channel 0 communication indicator is displayed on the front panel. Next to channel 0, there are two 8-pin mini-DIN connectors, labeled Channel 1A and Channel 2A, and there is a DH+ programming terminal connecting parallel channels 1A and 2A. There are four 3-pin connectors used as communication ports. These three-pin connectors are used for channels 1A, 1B, 2A, and 2B. All of these ports can be used as remote I/O scanners, remote I/O adapters, or DH+ communication ports. The maximum cable length of a DH+ link depends on the transmission rate. It is essential that all devices on the DH+ link communicate at the same rate. When the speed is 57.6 kbit/s, the longest length is 3048 meters; When the speed is 230.4 kbit/s, the maximum length is 762 meters. The 1785-L80B has several indicators on the front panel for easy interaction. Indicators show the status of the controller. The indicator light labeled "BATT" reflects the battery status. The indicator marked with "PROC" indicates the current operating mode of the controller, which is green in "RUN" mode and red when there is an exception. When I/O forcing is enabled, the FORCE indicator is amber. COMM indicator is associated with the communication status of channel 0. If the indicator is green, the channel is communicating. Communication channels 1A, 1B, 2A, and 2B each have dedicated status indicators.
The Allen-Bradley 1785-L80B is a programmable logic controller (PLC) in the PLC-5 series. It is part of the enhanced PLC 5 series and the main feature is 100,000 words of embedded memory capable of accommodating any hybrid 3072 I/O or 3072 input and 3072 output when running in complementary mode.

Enhanced PLC 5 controllers, such as the 1785-L80B, are primarily used when the control system needs to communicate with a large number of Remote I/O (RIO) devices and connect to a large number of Data Highway Plus (DH+) devices.
When installed, the 1785-L80B can be installed in the 1771-A1B, 1771-A2B, 1771-A3B, 1717-A3B1, and 1771-A4B PLC5 chassis. The processor supports power supplies including 1770-P1, 1770-P45, 1770-P5, 1771-PE, 1771-P4S1, 1771-P6S1, 1771-P4R, and 1771-P6R.
It is also used to configure I/O modules and extend racks.
