The Central processing unit (CPU) module is equipped with a high-performance processor for fast cycle times. It comes with an onboard 100 Mbit/s Ethernet network connection for communication between controllers, operating stations, and engineering tools. The two serial line interfaces are connected. One interface can be used for Modbus communication, while the other is used for diagnostics. The CPU has 10 MB of memory, of which 2 MB is battery backup. For demanding applications, cycle and priority driven tasks with eight cycle times and adjustable cycle times can be configured, as well as a cycle PLC-type task that runs as fast as possible.
