交流电机（alternating-current motor）英文大多缩略表述成 AC motor ，因此，在日语中很多情况下也表述成AC 电机，本书就采用这种表述。

AC 电机大致可分成整流子型电机、同步电机及感应电机。

同步电机及感应电机均是由旋转磁场决定转速的AC 电机。

这里所谓旋转磁场，是指在定子线圈中接入三相交流及二相交流等多相交流电流时，产生的磁场以多相交流电流频率所决定的转速（＝同步速度）旋转的现象。转子通过旋转磁场被吸引而旋转，AC 电机是依据其旋转方法的不同而分类的。
