Features and functions

Woodward DSLC-2 (Digital Synchronizer and Load Control) is a microprocessor-based synchronizer and load control designed for use in three-phase alternators. DSLC-2 integrates synchronizer, load sensor, load control, dead bus closure system, VAR, power factor and process control in one powerful package.


Applications allow for precise parallel and control of up to 32 generators. A dedicated Ethernet system provides seamless communication between DSLC-2 and MSLC-2 units. DCS and PLC interfaces are easily implemented by providing a second Ethernet port for customers to remotely control and monitor using Modbus TCP. Modbus RTU can be used via a separate RS-485 port.

Redundant Ethernet networks can be implemented using two Ethernet ports.


Woodward developed the new DSLC-2 using the original solid DSLC combined with ten years of application experience. The DSLC-2 performs well in simple generator or complex generator system applications. The DSLC-2/MSLC-2 combination provides multi-unit, segmented, utility and networked circuit breaker control for complex power systems.


Features include:

A dedicated Ethernet network enables precise system communication between all DSLC-2 and MSLC-2, thereby reducing system cabling.

Ethernet Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU for remote control and monitoring.

Redundant Ethernet communication for enhanced reliability.

The System Update feature allows you to remove or add a generator set.

The new DSLC-2 can be configured for a variety of applications.

The integrated DSLC-2 and MSLC-2 system capabilities eliminate the need for redundant sensors such as PT, CT, and MOP connected to a single module such as load sensors and synchronizers.

The rear panel mount and reduced size frees up door space and provides easy wiring.

No additional relay logic is required to control dead bus closure.

Paralleling of slip frequency, voltage matching and speed bias transmission between synchronizer and load control enables smooth paralleling without the risk of reverse power tripping.

Three-phase true RMS power detection enables DSLC-2 control to be accurate even when the phase load and voltage fluctuations are unbalanced.

When a transformer is included in the system, the phase Angle of the GCB is corrected.

The Woodward Toolkit ™ software allows for flexible setup using the same basic menu tree and overview screen as the original DSLC. A graphical overview of generator and bus parameters and trend analysis make DSLC-2 commissioning friendly. All Woodward devices can be programmed with a single connection to the network.

The ToolKit can be accessed through one of the Ethernet ports or through the RS-232 port.

These units are designed for standard three-phase alternator systems. The DSLC series is equipped with a combination of synchronizers, load control units and sensors.


Other features included with the system include Ethernet Modbus TCP, which provides accurate grid system communication between connected synchronizers. The 8440-1878 is a 5 amp version of DSLC-2 with a current transformer (CT) input terminal.
