The 9905-003 is part of the Woodward SPM-A synchronizer series. These synchronizer modules are designed with a range of user-adjustable dynamic characteristics to match the dynamic characteristics of the engine. Small and medium-sized diesel engines require fast dynamic units, while large equipment (large diesel/gas/gasoline engines and turbomachinery) require slow dynamic units.

The 9905-003 operates by biasing the speed of the off-line generator to which it is attached so that the frequency and phase match the speed of the other generator in the system. Later, when the circuit breaker is matched within the limit before the specified matching time, it sends a contact closure signal to close the circuit breaker. The device has a frequency range of 50 to 60 Hz, a phase Angle of +/- 10 degrees, and a voltage matching capability of less than 5%. Standard operating modes for native installations include RUN, CHECK, PERMISSIVE, and OFF.
