The 8273-503 unit, manufactured by Woodward, is a version of the 2301D load distribution and speed control family. The 8273-503 is a microprocessor-based device designed to manage the speed and load distribution of generators powered by diesel or other gas engines. It includes highly flexible software that reduces the number of auxiliary devices required in the control system, reduces user costs, and allows users to customize their equipment to their unique engine system. This particular version accepts 24 V DC inputs and is designed to operate in hazardous environments, which means it has additional protection against parameters such as temperature or humidity.

The 8273-503 can operate in base load mode, pressure drop mode, or synchronous mode, and can operate in any of these three user Settings for greater flexibility. Synchronous mode is used for constant prime mover speed, sag mode is used for speed control as a load function, and base load mode provides constant load level operation. The 8273-503 is also equipped with a variety of inputs and outputs, including analog inputs, analog outputs, discrete relay driver outputs, and discrete switch inputs. Inputs and outputs are achieved through terminals driven by screwless springs.
