Part 8280-501 is a Woodward digital controller with integrated self-diagnostics and a number of user-configurable features. The controller is part of the Woodward 723 digital controller family and features many of the standard features of 723 controllers. The 723 controller model 8280-501 has an external power rating of 18-40 Vdc, making it a low-voltage 723 controller. Like the other 723 models, this one has a metal case that can withstand temperatures of up to 70 °C during operation and up to 105 °C during storage.

The Woodward unit 8280-501 is designed to control reciprocating engines in a variety of applications and offers compatibility with multiple accessories to extend the controller's capabilities, including load distribution and engine monitoring functions. This also includes support for LonTalk-compatible products such as thermocouples, RTDS, and analog and discrete I/O through one of the LON communication channels of the 723 controller. There are also two serial interfaces on the 723 that can be used for RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485 communication.

Even without expanding the controller's input/output, Woodward 723 model 8280-501 features multiple standard analog and discrete I/ OS. Some of these I/ OS are configurable. Woodward Product Specification 02759 describes these controls in detail.

The 8280-501 module can be used with Woodward Handheld Programmer to make all required adjustments quickly and easily with all menus. All previous set points on the module are stored in permanent memory.
