The Type 8280-1129 is a single-engine digital speed control designed for single-engine, single-propeller (variable or fixed pitch) Marine propulsion systems. The Woodward 723PLUS controller can be used in conjunction with a mid-to-high speed diesel reciprocating engine to control speed and load. Speed sensing is done by a passive magnetic pickup (MPU) or an active proximity switch (two inputs).

I/O on the 723PLUS 8280-1129 controller consists of three configurable analog outputs, one actuator output, and three relay inputs (engine failure, stop, status indication). This Woodward controller has three communication ports, as shown below:

One port dedicated to a standard PC interface, Watch Window, or handheld programmer (Woodward part number 9907-205)

The two ports can be configured as RS-422, RS-232 or RS-485.

Of the two configurable communication ports, one is configured as Servlink and the other is configured as Modbus.

The Woodward control model 8280-1129 requires A voltage supply of 18 to 40 Vdc, capable of delivering 40 W and 7 A currents. It is suitable for use in the operating temperature range of -40 to +70 °C (-40 to +158 °F). Installing and operating this 723PLUS controller outside of this range can damage the device and negatively affect performance.
