The 8280-1056 is a digital control unit for redundant load distribution. The unit is one of the available models in the Woodward 723PLUS digital control family, with load sharing via the company's digital communication medium "Control LON". Redundancy is achieved through the use of two LON ports, with repeated data on each LON network.
723PLUS models 8280-1056 support load distribution for up to 6 engines on up to 2 buses. For the system to work properly, each engine needs a unique LON address. There are four main parameters for connecting to the exchange over the LON network:

Bus tiebreaker status
Generator breaker condition
Select the bus by discrete input E or software Settings
The control functions provided by the unit include speed sensing, speed control, speed reference, fuel limiter (starting fuel limiter and maximum fuel limiter), auxiliary output (three 4-20mA), generator control (synchronization and descent), jump rate limiter, alarm, and load distribution (via LON).
The speed sensing on the 8280-1056 controller is done by one or two speed sensors. These sensors can be magnetic pickers (MPUs) or proximity probes. If overspeed (above 2000 rpm) or underspeed (15 rpm) conditions are detected, a speed fault is indicated by the LED. There are two types of alarms on the 723PLUS controller: primary alarm and secondary alarm. Overspeed conditions and the failure of two speed sensors always trigger major alarms.
