Prime mover speed monitoring is carried out by three magnetic pickups, each of which interfaces with a separate speed sensing unit. These units are used independently for speed sampling and speed calculation functions and are connected in a two-out-of-three configuration for prime mover overspeed condition detection.

The Woodward ProTech system is configured to allow individual testing of the speed sensing unit without taking the prime mover offline. This also means that any single unit in the 907-148 model can be replaced while the device is running. All three devices have their own 120 Vac/dc power supply and their own operator interface.

Model 9907-148 is a power trip model. If the power is off, the prime mover may not trip. The power trip overspeed protection model is only suitable for applications requiring a power trip system. The Woodward ProTech manual 85204 (G) has a table showing the available ProTech models with power trip and power trip options. These models can be configured to be compatible with various power supply combinations, most of which are available via AX control.

Like the other models in the ProTech overspeed protection system family, the 9907-148 has a remote reset function. The unit must be reset before the turbine is started or after tripping. The remote reset function allows the operator to reset the device from a remote location.

The ProTech model 9907-178 also features a NEMA 4 and 4X certified housing that is locked to prevent unauthorized access to programming and test functions.
