The overspeed protection system features three speed sensing units contained in a locked IP 65 (similar to NEMA 4) certified housing, with an operator interface for each unit on the front panel. This system has three 220 Vac power supplies, one for each unit.
Trip speed set point, Magnetic pick up (MPU) fault set point, trip on MPU fault, MPU gear teeth, and MPU fault timeout are adjustable parameters set using the LCD and keyboard on each operator interface. During operation, these parameters can be viewed on the LCD along with the current speed, peak speed and cause of trip. The current speed of each speed sensing unit is the first default parameter displayed on the unit LCD.
Units A, B, and C are identical and all follow the same process to monitor prime mover speed and perform speed calculations. The speed is sampled every 5 ms using the MPU, and after performing the speed calculation, the hardware votes two-thirds to determine whether the overspeed condition is met.
Any individual unit will trip when the current speed of any unit exceeds its jump set point, but only overspeed detection of at least two units will cause the trip relay to take the prime mover offline. The system design also allows for thermal replacement and testing of individual units while the prime mover is online.
When a device trips, it stays in the trip state until it is reset or powered back on. The unit must be completely reset before the turbine can be started, but ProTech models 9905-997 have a remote reset feature to simplify this step.
