The ProTech overspeed protection model 9905-989 monitors the prime mover speed for overspeed situations. This is done by using three magnetic pickups (MPUs) that interface with three separate, identical speed sensing units. The speed is sampled every 5 ms, and cells A, B, and C perform separate speed calculations. The subsequent hardware two-thirds vote determines whether to activate the trip relay. If only one unit detects an overspeed situation, that unit will trip, but the other two units will continue to operate and continue to provide accurate output.
The current speed of each device can be viewed on that device's LCD located on the front panel. Peak speeds for each unit can also be viewed here. When an overspeed condition is detected, if the speed exceeds the peak speed previously recorded by the device, the new peak speed is updated and stored in non-volatile memory.
Each unit also has a keyboard, LED indicator and potentiometer. The Type 9905-989 speed sensing units are all contained in the same locked IP 65 (similar to NEMA 4) certified housing. Units A, B and C are equipped with their own 2V DC power supply.
Some of the functions of the 9905-989 system are realized through the modular design of the equipment. This system is capable of running when one of the units is offline, allowing continued operation during unit testing (built-in self-testing), troubleshooting of any unit, and unit replacement.
