Woodward ProTech 203 Model 9905-982 has three identical speed sensing units, all housed in a locked housing. If optional stainless steel wheels are used, this housing is NEMA 4X certified. Each unit comes with its own 120 Vac/dc power supply.
The 9905-982 is a power trip model, which means that during normal operation, the voting relay is powered off. In order to meet the API 612 overspeed trip specification, a cold-coil monitoring device must be connected to the system.
There are three magnetic pickups (MPUs), each of which interfaces with a different speed sensing unit. Cells A, B, and C perform separate speed calculations and then together perform two-thirds of the hardware voting. If a device detects overspeed, the device will be tripped and operation will continue. If both units detect overspeed, the trip relay is activated in the system and the operation is shut down.
Due to its modular design and two-thirds voting configuration, the Model 9905-982 offers a variety of features to reduce system downtime. One of these features is hot change. If any individual speed sensing unit needs to be replaced, it can be replaced without taking the prime mover offline. In this case, the two units that remain online will maintain control of the system and continue to provide accurate output. Similarly, individual units can be tested while the system is online.
