The overspeed protection device continuously monitors overspeeds by using three magnetic pickups (MPUs) that interface with three separate speed sensing units, each of which performs its own speed calculations. When overspeed was detected after two-thirds of the vote, the trip relay was activated. Type 9905-877 is an electric-powered trip system.
Features of this model include remote reset, alarm output, built-in self-test, and locking housing.
The locked housing of Model 9905-877 ensures that no unauthorized changes are made to system programming and no unauthorized tests are performed, as key access is required to switch between MONITOR and PROGRAM modes. The 9905-877 housing is NEMA 4 / IP 65 compliant.
The speed sensing unit can be tested or replaced one at a time while the prime mover stays online. The 9905-877 system is designed in such a way that accurate output can be maintained using only two of the three units. If one of the devices trips, it needs to be reset or powered back on before it can be brought back online.
Some of the factors that can cause tripping are MPU failure or signal loss, interlock failure, overspeed testing, or the unit not being reset at all before the turbine is restarted. If the device trips, the trip will be indicated by the alarm output and the LED on the operator interface of the device.
