This overspeed protection system adopts modular design. The 9905-869 system has three separate units, each with its own 24 Vdc power supply. Each of these three identical speed sensing units interfaces with a magnetic pickup (MPU) to monitor the prime mover speed. All three units are housed in the same IP65-certified housing, which is locked with a key switch to protect against unauthorized changes and testing. The modular design of the Type 9905-869 allows testing of individual units at a time while the prime mover is online, as well as hot replacement.

The 9905-869 is part of the ProTech 203 overspeed protection system. This model is one of the power-off trip versions in the Woodward series. The trip relay is activated when overspeed is detected. The accuracy of the system is ensured by using a two-thirds voting configuration of three speed sensing units. The actual speed of any of the three units can be viewed on the LCD of each unit's own operating interface. Each interface also has a keyboard and LED function status indicator.

Because of the hardware voting configuration, the 9905-869 will continue to operate even after a single cell trip. In addition to overspeed status detection, there are several possible reasons why one of the units may trip, including but not limited to loss of MPU signals, failure of the unit to reset before the turbine restarts, or interlock failure.
