The GE Fanuc/VMIC VMIVME-5531 VMEbus Fiber Optic Repeater link is a high performance and easy to use method for connecting two or more VME systems together via fiber optic cables. The Repeater Link is a two-board group that allows a VME slave I/O board residing in one VME chassis to be controlled by a VME master residing in another chassis. Generally, the VME chassis where the VME master device resides is called the main chassis, and the VME slave board is located in the auxiliary chassis. The two board groups are configured with one board designated for the main box and the other board designated for the auxiliary box. The primary VME chassis can communicate with multiple secondary chassis by using multiple REPEATER links in a star configuration.


The link is software transparent. Any VME master device in the main box can access (read or write to) any slave device board in the secondary box. Only slave boards that do not interrupt are allowed in the auxiliary chassis. When the VME master device (usually the CPU board) addresses any board in the secondary case, a link between the main case and the secondary case is automatically established.


Whenever the primary device in the main box issues a VME read/write cycle, the cycle is repeated to the secondary box. If the slave board in any secondary chassis responds to this address, data is transferred (read or written) between the chassis, and a data transfer confirmation (DTACK) is generated to the host (in the main chassis) to complete the loop.


The link consists of two boards (VMIVME-5531M and VMIVME-5531S) and two cables, enabling the VME system to scale beyond a single chassis.


The link reset switch located on the front panel of the VMIVME-5531M allows the user to set SYSRESET in the auxiliary chassis (or other auxiliary chassis in a multi-link configuration) without resetting the main chassis. When SYSRESET is set in the main box, it will be repeated to all auxiliary boxes.


Both the VMIVME-5531M and VMIVME-5531S have a two-color LED, which indicates the status of the link. When the local receiver reaches phase-lock and frame synchronization with the remote transmitter. A red LED indicates that the link is not ready, which may be due to a damaged cable or miswiring, a remote chassis that is not powered on, or a damaged link. The LED is reset.
