Three A/D modes of operation
The VMIVME-4514A is a 16-channel, 12-bit analog input/output (AIO) board. It provides the excitation and response functions encountered in closed-loop simulation systems based on VME bus. Analog signals are available through the P2 backplane connector. It is self-contained and has a resident 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and digital-to-analog converter (DAC). The board also supports built-in testing capabilities to check all active components on the board. The VMIVME-4514A provides a single board solution to meet the analog input/output requirements of VME bus applications such as process control, simulators, trainers, and monitoring.
The VMIVME-4514A provides users with 16 analog outputs with a resolution of 12 bits. The output is designed with separate sample-hold (S&H) amplifiers, one for each channel. The output can be programmed (via onboard jumpers) to operate in various voltage ranges. These ranges are 0 to +5 V, 0 to +10 V (unipolar), ±2.5, ±5.0, or ±10 V (bipolar). Each output can provide or absorb up to 10 mA of current at ±10 V. The output can be disconnected from the I/O connector for offline testing.
The board also accepts 16 analog inputs. These inputs can be differential or pseudo-differential (single-ended). A 36 Hz unipolar point input filter can be ordered for the input. The input ADC can be programmed with onboard jumpers to operate over a variety of voltage ranges. These ranges are 0 to +5 V, 0 to +10 V (unipolar), ±2.5, ±5.0, or ±10 V (bipolar). The input has 12-bit resolution. The input can be scanned by an onboard multiplexer, and the data is stored in a dual-port memory.
The VMIVME-4514A has three ADC operating modes. They are random polling, scan polling, and automatic scanning. When the circuit board is powered on, the system is reset, or under program control, it enters the automatic scanning mode. In this mode, all 16 channels are scanned consecutively. Their inputs are digitized and stored in 12 4514-bit dual-port registers. There is no need to program from these registers except to read data.
