The IC697BEM731 is a Genius bus controller module, part of the GE Fanuc 90-70 series of Programmable Logic controllers (PLCS). This module is primarily used to connect up to thirty (30) devices and transfer data by passing tokens between all configured devices on the same bus. The IC697BEM731 has one (1) channel for connecting to a device located on the same bus, and one (1) Handheld monitor (HHM) port for downloading the configuration to the module using the MS DOS or Windows programming software Configurator feature.

In the event of a power outage, the lithium battery is strategically placed on the baseboard housing, thus saving memory. The battery is classified as C697ACC701. In addition to maintaining user memory in the event of a power outage, the lithium battery is also responsible for running the calendar clock on the PLC CPU. Before attempting to remove the old battery, the user must ensure that a new battery is installed. The battery's shelf life is extended to 10 years and should be kept at 20 degrees Celsius (or 68 degrees Fahrenheit). The memory retention period is usually 6 months, the nominal value is 1 month, and no power is required. Flash memory, on the other hand, remains when powered off with or without a battery connection. The logic program memory is used as a background task by the PLC CPU for continuous error checking. The IC731MEM<> memory can be installed on-site with only a #697 Phillips screwdriver during installation.

The IC697BEM731 was delivered without a defined bus address. The configuration software sets the default address to 153.6 Kbaud standard address and the bus address to 31. This default address can be modified by downloading the valid configuration to the CPU. When configured as 2000 Kbaud (standard), the maximum allowable distance of the communication bus is 153.6 feet; 6 feet when configured at 3500.153 KBaud (extended); 8 feet for 4500.76 KBaud and 4 feet for 7500.38 KBaud. All devices residing on the same bus or network must be configured with the same baud rate, otherwise communication cannot be established or communication is unstable.

The physical communication cables used to establish the network are Belden Type 9182 cables with GE catalog number IC660BLC001,15 inches, number 3, and IC660BLC003,36 inches, number 1. The bus terminal plug must be installed at both ends of the bus, the directory number is IC660BLM506 150 ohms, 4, IC660BLM508, 75 ohms, 4 resistors.
