GE Fanuc IC693CMM311 is a communication coprocessor module. This component provides high performance coprocessors for all 90-30 series modular cpus. It cannot be used with embedded cpus. This covers models 311, 313 or 323. The module supports GE Fanuc CCM communication protocol, SNP protocol and RTU (Modbus) slave communication protocol. Modules can be configured using configuration software. Alternatively, the user can select the default Settings. It has two serial ports. Port 1 supports RS-232 applications, while port 2 supports RS-232 or RS-485 applications. Both ports are connected to a single connector of the module. Therefore, the module is equipped with a star-shaped cable (IC693CBL305) in order to separate the two ports and make wiring easier.

In a system with a CPU of 4 or more, up to 331 communication coprocessor modules can be used. This can only be done through the CPU backboard. In versions prior to 4.0, this module presents a special case when both ports are configured as SNP slave devices. The ID value -1 in a cancellation datagram request received by either slave device will eventually cancel all established datagrams on both slave devices within the same CMM. Unlike the CMM711 module, the CMM4 module has no interaction between the datagrams established on the serial port. The IC311CMM1996 <>.<> version released in 1993 solved this problem. The GE Fanuc IC693CMM311 communication coprocessor module is used as an extension processor and is specifically responsible for external communication of the 90-30 series modular cpus, especially the 311, 313 or 323 models. Some of the communication protocols supported by the GE Fanuc IC693CMM311 communication coprocessor module are the GE Fanuc CCM, SNP, and RTU Modbus protocols. Serial port 2 is capable of receiving RS-232 or RS-485 communications as needed. The connection of RS-693 or RS-305 protocols requires a star cable sold separately (part number IC232CBL485) because both serial protocols share the same connection port. Serial port 1 is designed for RS-232 applications. Rated operating voltage is 5 volts DC, obtained from the PLC backplane, rated current is 400 MA.

The GE Fanuc IC693CMM311 communication coprocessor module can be simply configured using proprietary handheld configuration tools or proprietary software on a personal computer with a PCI card. The only indicator leds visible on the communication coprocessor module are the "module normal" LED and the status leds for the two serial ports. If the module is not running, the "Module OK" indicator of the GE Fanuc IC693CMM311 communication coprocessor module will go off, will light up when the module is working normally, and will keep blinking during the power-on diagnosis. All the necessary information to control the most common communication processes is pre-loaded onto the device, so modules can be up and running immediately after unpacking without additional customization.
