The Multilin family of motor control center units was originally developed by GE Automation. The modules in this series are designed to cover numerous functions related to the protection and control of motors.
The functions covered by the MMII-PD-MOD501-120 include protection of the motor from any possible overload or phase imbalance. If the contactor or rotor fails or stops, the module is able to cover and manage the problem itself.
The device is also equipped with a range of useful internal hardware, such as a heat-winding thermistor circuit that reacts with an electric charge when the temperature changes. There is also an undervoltage automatic restart in case the intake drops below the required minimum level (120 volts AC).
Externally, the unit is equipped with a large number of input and output ports. It integrates 20 I/O ports. Four of them are outputs, two are contractor outputs, and then two are programmable outputs. The other 16 ports are input ports. Six are fixed inputs, and then 10 are programmable.
The monitor display displays phase current, ground current, heat capacity, and analog inputs on the monitor. It also records the trip and pre-trip values for proper evaluation.

The MMII-PD-MOD501-120 operates on a series of highly generic Settings called "set points" that control system activity, such as when tripping and alarms occur, which parameters the device collects, and which overload curves should be adopted for system protection. When the relay detects that a system parameter exceeds a user-set rating for a user-set period of time, the relay can activate an appropriate response to protect the system from further damage.
