The device is part of the VMIC series of devices; A set of input/output boards, CPU modules, digital-to-analog converters, and other devices. The units were originally designed and produced by General Electric's Industrial automation division, but after being removed from the production line, Abaco Systems took over production.

The unit is designated as the GE VMIVME-4140 module, which is a high voltage digital output board capable of providing 128 channels of high voltage and high current absorption output. The device is equipped with a series of open-collector output drivers capable of supporting minimum DC output voltages of 5 to 48 volts. Other standard VMIC features include protection capabilities, such as automatic surge current off protection, and overheat protection in case of any overvoltage or overheating.
