IC687RCM711 is a redundant communication module that provides a path for synchronous messages from the active unit to the backup unit. This is then used as a way to synchronize dual cpus in a FIP single-stand redundant system. This also allows the path of shared I/O data to be transferred between the two cells. The actual physical connection between the units of the FIP single-stand redundant system can consist of up to 3 feet of total interconnection cable. Compatible cpus include IC697CFR782 and IC697CFR28.
The IC687RCM711 redundant communication module occupies a slot in the rack and contains two connectors. The upper connector is used to connect the bus transmitter module, while the lower connector is not used for this purpose. There are five green leds that display status indicators for the health of the RCM module. They also monitor the control status of hot standby CPU redundancy systems.
The module also provides a button that allows the user to manually switch control from the active unit to the backup unit. This only works when the backup unit is ready for use. This allows users to maintain maintenance on previously active devices while the system is still online. After the role is switched, the new role cannot be switched for at least 10 seconds. This RCM must be configured into a FIP redundant system using Windows programming or MS-DOS software. This unit requires a 5V bus with an effective data rate of 500 KB per second.
